According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), very heavy rainfall is expected over northwest India and the western part of Peninsular India. Parts of Uttarakhand, U.P., Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are also likely to get substantial rainfall today.

The IMD has noted that widespread heavy rainfall across India has offset the June deficit, pushing overall monsoon precipitation into surplus. The rainfall deficit in central India has reduced from 14 percent to 6 percent between June 30 and July 6. However, northeastern states are currently grappling with severe flooding issues.

Rainfall in June was below par as per IMD, but heavy rainfall in the first week of July has not only compensated for the shortfall but has caused flooding in many parts of northeastern states. For Uttarakhand, IMD has issued a red alert, predicting very heavy rainfall for Uttarakhand, and the situation is expected to persist till July 10.

On the other hand, the flood-hit Indian state of Assam is on high alert as it braces for more rains in the coming days. The northeastern state has been inundated by flood waters for several days, affecting more than 600,000 people and killing at least 34. Assam experiences large-scale destruction to life and property every monsoon due to flooding in its vast network of rivers.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall over the past three days has caused widespread damage in Rajasthan. Officials have issued a flood alert for Tonk. In Bihar, the water level of different rivers is starting to rise in different places due to heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Light to moderate rain was recorded in many districts, including Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur, Buxar, Gaya, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Katihar, Khagaria, Munger, Nalanda, Patna, Nawada, Purnea, Saran, Sheikhpura, Siwan, and Vaishali since July 4, according to the latest rainfall bulletin issued by the Water Resources Department (WRD).
