Rapper and musician Nathan Joseph Mendes, better known by his stage name Tsumyoki, is honored to have received a nomination for the upcoming MTV European Music Awards (EMAs). He views this as a testament to the hard work and dedication he has put into his music. The Margao, Goa-born hip-hop musician has been nominated for a Best India Act category award. He will be up against rapper Dee MC, pop singer-songwriter Mali, indie-folk group When Chai Met Toast, and hip-hop star DIVINE for the prize. On November 5, the MTV EMAs, which are being held in Paris this year, will reveal the winners.

“The nomination feels incredible, especially after all of this. Being one of the first Goans to accomplish this, my family and state are incredibly proud of me, so I’m literally overjoyed and extremely proud of myself. If all goes as planned, maybe I can win this. I think I’m capable of,” Tsumyoki revealed in an interview with the Hindustan Times.

The rapper candidly talks about the song that garnered him the nomination, “IT’S AIGHT,” in an open conversation. “This is a project from my album. I believe it was worth it. Deserved it because it was so unique. With this release, we really pushed ourselves, and it had such a different tone and vibe. I feel that way, then.”

Mendes claims that the nomination gives him confidence in his path and all of the difficulties he overcame. “The industry politics, the people who make fun of you, the setbacks, the poor performances—you know, a lot of things happen, but you just keep going, and every setback teaches you a valuable lesson as well.” It is everything that counts, then. And you’ll be OK if you keep working hard,” the singer-songwriter adds.

The young musician rose to fame in 2019 with White Tee, then in 2021 with the Daboij album, and in 2021 with his debut EP, Way Too Messy. Talking about his music, the artist stated, “What makes my work unique is that I am performing English music in India, which is extremely uncommon. In addition, the song’s structure and creative direction, as well as my demeanor and interactions with many of my fans truly set me apart sonically. My music reflects that Indians can do anything. We can create any kind of music; we are unstoppable. I am proof that Indians are truly capable of anything; we can even produce music with a Western sound and have it originate from India. We can create music with any sound worldwide since we are so diverse.”
