October 10, 2024: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster collaboration on energy technology innovation, aiming to reduce emissions and facilitate clean energy transitions. This partnership comes at a time when global energy demand is rising, particularly in emerging and developing economies, and the need for sustainable energy solutions has never been more pressing. This report analyzes the significance of the MoU, key areas of collaboration, and the broader implications for clean energy innovation in emerging markets.
The MoU was signed at IEA Headquarters in Paris by IEA’s Executive Director Fatih Birol and remotely by IIT Delhi’s Director Rangan Banerjee and Deputy Director for Strategy & Planning Ambuj Sagar. The Indian Ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf, also witnessed the event, signifying the importance of international cooperation on energy issues.
IIT Delhi is one of India’s premier technical institutes, established in 1961. It has gained a reputation as a center of excellence for research in science, engineering, and technology. IIT Delhi’s involvement in the MoU indicates its growing role in global clean energy innovation, particularly in the context of emerging economies. The institution’s focus on education and research aligns with the broader goals of building capacity for sustainable development and climate action.
As part of this collaboration, IIT Delhi and the IEA recently published a joint report titled Clean Energy Innovation Policies in Emerging and Developing Economies. The report emphasizes the economic opportunities clean energy presents for these regions and the crucial role that policy plays in scaling up innovation. It was launched at two high-profile international events: the 15th Clean Energy Ministerial and the 9th Mission Innovation Ministerial in Brazil, attended by various stakeholders, including experts from industry, academia, government, and civil society.
Fatih Birol, IEA Executive Director, highlighted the vast potential for emerging economies in the clean energy economy but stressed that policies, investments, and expertise are needed to unlock this potential. “The IEA looks forward to working closely with IIT Delhi on some of the most pressing energy challenges facing the world today. The potential for emerging and developing economies in the new energy economy is vast, but the policies, investment, and expertise must be tapped if it is to be realized. This MoU will help address some of the existing barriers through knowledge sharing, best practices, and tangible actions that can support countries to deploy clean energy technologies and make progress on their climate and energy goals,” he said.
Rangan Banerjee, IIT Delhi Director, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to help build capacity to address climate and sustainability challenges. He said, “We are delighted to be partnering with the IEA to work on the clean energy transition. We believe this partnership can help us build capacity to address the climate and sustainability challenge and develop future-ready graduates for society. IEA and IIT Delhi together can enable strategies for developing and emerging economies to manage the transition to net zero.”
