The Hyderabad police and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation put up banners along the road stating, “No idol immersion on Tank Bund.”

Tension arose on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, as several devotees who came to Tank Bund with Ganesh idols for immersion were reportedly turned away by the police. Banners stating “No idol immersion on Tank Bund” were displayed along the road by the Hyderabad police and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This action followed a 2021 order by the Telangana High Court, which prohibited the immersion of plaster of Paris (POP) idols in Hussain Sagar. Devotees from different parts of the city gathered along the Tank Bund stretch, leaving their idols on the boundary wall or parapet of the lake. However, local groups involved in organizing the Ganesh festival in the city appeared unconvinced by the restrictions.

Addressing the issue, Bhagwant Rao, General Secretary of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsava Samithi, stated, “No court or government can take away my birthright to immerse idols in Hussain Sagar. Ganesh idols have been immersed in water bodies even before Independence, and that tradition will continue.” According to the Dommalaguda Police, the area remained peaceful as no devotees arrived on Tuesday. “A few individuals arrived on Monday evening with small idols, but they were asked to wait until the High Court order was issued. After the order, no further issues were observed, and we have not made any preventive detentions,” said Inspector D. Srinivas Reddy.
