The governor of the southern state of Guerrero said on Monday that the effects of Hurricane Otis, the Category 5 storm that devastated the Mexican Pacific resort city of Acapulco last week, have left 100 people dead and missing. With winds of up to 165 kilometers (266 km/h), Otis flooded Acapulco on Wednesday, ripping roofs off homes, hotels, and other businesses, submerging vehicles, severing communications, and cutting off air and roads in communication. When the city’s some 900,000 inhabitants were in dire need of food and water, the looting began. A statement in Acapulco’s home province of Guerrero reported 46 dead and another 54 missing.

Mexican public safety officials reported 48 deaths on Sunday; Forty-three of them were in Acapulco and six more in nearby Coyuca de Benitez.

According to the Guerrero administration, the dead included a Canadian, a Briton, and an American. On Monday afternoon, many locals in Acapulco were still having trouble putting their shattered lives back together.

Rumualda Hernandez, 62, from the Renasimio neighborhood a few miles from the beach, asked authorities to send help away from her destroyed home so she could wash her muddy clothes. Hernandez recalled the intensity of the storm, with flooding in her home rising above her head. “I was shaking with fear,” Hernandez said. “I thought I was going to die.” Concerned that the authorities were not doing enough, fishermen and workers on tour boats gathered Saturday afternoon at Playa Honda in Acapulco to search for missing friends and colleagues.

Luis Alberto Medina, a fisherman, said he is looking for six dockworkers. “It was really scary,” Medina said. “We’ve already seen the bodies of others.”
