Humayun’s Tomb: An Icon of Mughal Grandeur

Humayun’s Tomb, located in Delhi, India, is a remarkable historical and architectural landmark. Commissioned by Empress Bega Begum in 1569–70, it was designed by Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. The tomb is one of the earliest examples of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Turkish, and Indian elements, and serves as a precursor to the grand Taj Mahal.
Architecture
The tomb is constructed primarily from red sandstone, with white marble accents for the dome and decorative elements, creating a striking contrast and a majestic appearance. The central chamber, housing Humayun’s cenotaph, is octagonal, with arched entrances on each side. A defining feature is the double dome, which rises to a height of 42.5 meters, symbolizing the heavens.

The Charbagh Garden
Humayun’s Tomb is set within a vast Charbagh garden, designed in the Persian style to symbolize paradise. As the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, it set a precedent for subsequent Mughal architecture, particularly influencing the design of the Taj Mahal. The garden is divided into four squares by water channels, reflecting the four rivers of paradise as described in the Quran. Visitors are guided toward the tomb by these pathways, symbolizing the journey to the afterlife.
Cultural and Historical Impact
Beyond its architectural splendor, Humayun’s Tomb is steeped in stories of love, loss, and imperial grandeur. On the afternoon of Rabi al-Awwal 7, 963 (January 20, 1556), Nasir al-Din Muhammad Humayun, the second Mughal emperor of India, appeared on the roof of his library at Din-Panah in Delhi. He remained there for several hours in full view of the people gathered at the Jami Masjid nearby. At the end of the day, he called for his mathematicians and ordered them to calculate the moment for the rising of Venus.

Towards evening, he started down the stairs of his library, but on the second step, he heard the muezzin’s call to prayer and stopped. The steps were slippery, and, according to contemporary historians, the emperor’s foot caught in his robe, causing him to drop his staff and fall upon his head. For the next three days, he lay near death, and on the fourth day, he passed away. He was fifty-one years old and had ruled India twice: the first time from 1530 to 1540, and the second from 1555 until his death on January 24, 1556.
Humayun’s Tomb was commissioned by Humayun’s widow, Empress Bega Begum, out of deep love and devotion. She spent her life in pilgrimage and prayer, overseeing the construction to ensure it would be a fitting tribute to her husband. The tomb complex also serves as a necropolis for the Mughal dynasty, housing the graves of over 150 Mughal family members.
Humayun’s Tomb has played a significant role in India’s history. In 1857, during the Indian Rebellion, the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, sought refuge within the tomb before being captured by the British. This event marked the end of Mughal rule in India.
Humayun’s Tomb is more than just a burial site; it is a testament to the grandeur of Mughal architecture and a symbol of the dynasty’s cultural zenith. Its historical significance and architectural beauty continue to draw scholars, historians, and tourists from around the world, making it an enduring symbol of the Mughal Empire’s legacy.
