Rakesh Wazir, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association in Katra, has urged visitors to refrain from consuming alcohol while in Katra to uphold the sanctity of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. His statement followed reports of socialite Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry, and seven others allegedly drinking alcohol near the shrine. “Currently, alcohol is banned in Katra. Even garlic and onion are avoided in food here to preserve the sanctity of Mata Vaishno Devi,” Wazir told ANI. “Although the alcohol was consumed inside the room, we believe one should avoid it entirely while in Katra,” he added. Wazir also mentioned that he had spoken to the hotel management after questions arose about how such an incident went unnoticed.
The Katra police registered an FIR on March 15 against Orhan Awatramani (Orry) and others, including Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasila Arzamaskina, for allegedly consuming alcohol at a Katra hotel.
According to a press release from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the FIR was filed after a complaint was received about the guests drinking alcohol within the hotel premises, despite being clearly informed that alcohol and non-vegetarian food were strictly prohibited in the cottage suites due to the religious significance of the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage site.
Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, SSP Reasi Paramvir Singh (JKPS) ordered strict action to ensure that such acts involving alcohol or drugs at religious sites are not tolerated, as they offend the sentiments of devotees. A special team led by SP Katra, DySP Katra, and SHO Katra was formed to track down the accused and enforce respect for the faith and local regulations.
