September 26, 2024: The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, was in the middle of a hate crime on Wednesday when the mandir was desecrated with anti-Hindu messages, specifically targeting the Hindu community. This is the second such attack on Hindu temples in the U.S. within ten days. The temple was defaced with a hateful message, “Hindus go back,” suggesting xenophobic intent aimed at erasing the presence of Hindus in the U.S.

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating and treating the incident as a hate crime, underscoring the seriousness of the offense. Along with hate-filled graffiti, vandals also cut water lines at the property, further demonstrating the perpetrators’ intent to disrupt temple activities and damage the community’s infrastructure.

“We stand united against hate with prayers for peace,” the organization said in a post on X. Despite the attack, the Hindu community responded with resilience by organizing a prayer ceremony to promote “harmony.”

“Community leaders gathered for a heartfelt prayer ceremony at the BAPS Mandir in Sacramento, CA, following the desecration of the mandir. Inspired by Mahant Swami Maharaj, we remain dedicated to promoting harmony and standing against intolerance. Together we will defeat hate,” the organization said while posting pictures on X.
