Himachal Pradesh is grappling with the aftermath of relentless heavy rains. It has triggered flash floods, landslides, and widespread disruption across the state. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state until July 7.
Mandi District Worst Hit
Heavy rains has severely affected Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. Particularly the Thunag subdivision, rendering roads impassable and severely disrupting essential services like electricity and water supply. A flash flood devastated a village in Mandi, and authorities have set up relief camps to accommodate those affected. The Indian Air Force has air-dropped food packets to reach stranded residents.
Losses and Casualties
The state’s disaster management authority has recorded losses exceeding ₹400 crore, although the actual damage is likely to be much higher. Rain-related incidents have claimed 37 lives so far, while road accidents have caused 26 more fatalities. In Mandi alone, officials have reported 40 missing persons.
Disruption and Response Efforts
The continuous downpour has thrown daily life into disarray, with schools severely affected and classrooms inundated. Authorities are working tirelessly to restore essential services and have deployed a coordinated team involving local administration, police, Home Guards, SDRF, and central forces, including the NDRF, for search and rescue operations.
Environmental Implications
Furthermore, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority, D.C. Rana, highlighted the broader environmental implications of the disaster, stating that these events are a consequence of global warming and climate change. “Himachal is not untouched by these impacts,” Rana noted.
Statewide Impact
The state’s infrastructure has been severely impacted, with:
- Over 250 roads blocked
- More than 500 electricity transformers out of service
- Around 700 drinking water schemes affected
Consequently, as the state braces for more rain in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert, closely monitoring the situation and working to mitigate the effects of the disaster.
