As the Israel-Hamas conflict intensifies, Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement has declared its unwavering support for its Palestinian ally, Hamas. Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Qassem, asserted that they are fully prepared to join the war against Israel when the time is right. This announcement comes as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to escalate, causing significant loss of life and destruction in the region.
Naim Qassem, the deputy chief of Hezbollah, made the declaration during a pro-Palestinian rally in Beirut’s southern suburbs. He emphasized Hezbollah’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and its readiness to contribute to the confrontation, stating, “We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it.” The declaration signals a strong alignment between Hezbollah and Hamas in their shared goals.
The Israel-Hamas conflict has entered its seventh day, marked by a continuous exchange of heavy fire. The recent violence began when hundreds of Hamas gunmen crossed the border from Gaza into Israel, resulting in the deaths of over 1,300 people, primarily civilians. Israel has responded with airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, leading to further casualties, including many civilians, including over 600 children, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
Hezbollah’s announcement came despite outreach from various international actors and calls for the group to refrain from involvement in the ongoing conflict. Naim Qassem dismissed these calls, affirming that Hezbollah would not be deterred by efforts from “major countries, Arab countries, and envoys from the United Nations” to stay out of the war. He stated, “Hezbollah knows its duties.”
The situation in the region has escalated to the point where cross-border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have also flared. A Reuters journalist was killed, and several others were wounded in southern Lebanon due to cross-border shelling, and Israeli forces reported retaliatory artillery fire toward Lebanese territory.
Additionally, the Israeli Air Force reported striking a “Hezbollah terror target in southern Lebanon” in response to unidentified aerial objects infiltrating Israel and an attack on an Israeli drone. This indicates a broader regional escalation and involvement in the conflict.
In Beirut’s southern suburbs, over 1,000 Hezbollah supporters gathered for a solidarity rally in support of Gaza, carrying Palestinian flags and banners. The supporters chanted slogans such as “strike Tel Aviv” while addressing Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The rally reflects the passionate support for the Palestinian cause in Lebanon and the broader Middle East.
Hezbollah’s declaration of support for Hamas in the Israel-Hamas conflict underscores the complex and volatile nature of the ongoing violence in the region. As tensions escalate and various actors become involved, the international community faces a challenging task in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict and preventing further loss of life and destruction. The situation continues to evolve rapidly, and it remains crucial to engage in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and bring about lasting peace in the region.
