Hezbollah, Lebanon’s Iran-backed militant group, announced on Tuesday that it had fired more than 100 rockets at Israeli military positions in retaliation for an Israeli strike in eastern Lebanon that resulted in one fatality the previous day.
In a statement, the group declared, “Hezbollah launched ‘more than a hundred Katyusha rockets’ on Tuesday morning at two military bases in the occupied Golan Heights.” It stated that this action was in response to Israeli attacks on our people, villages, and cities, most recently near the city of Baalbek, and the killing of a citizen.
Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, and Israel have been engaged in daily cross-border fire since the conflict erupted in Gaza. However, several Israeli strikes have targeted Hezbollah positions further north, escalating fears of a full-blown conflict.
On Monday, Israeli airstrikes near Lebanon’s eastern city of Baalbek claimed one life, marking the second raid on the Hezbollah stronghold since cross-border hostilities began. The Israeli military confirmed its jets had targeted two sites belonging to “Hezbollah’s aerial forces” in retaliation for strikes on the occupied Golan Heights over several days. On February 26, Israeli strikes hit Baalbek, approximately 100 km from the border, resulting in the deaths of two Hezbollah members.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hezbollah announced that its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had met with Khalil al-Hayya, a leading member of Hamas’s political bureau. They discussed ceasefire talks for the Gaza conflict, as well as attacks by Hamas’s regional allies to support its war efforts, according to the Hezbollah statement. Hezbollah has repeatedly stated that it will only halt its attacks on Israel with a ceasefire in Gaza. However, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant recently stated that any truce in Gaza would not alter Israel’s objective of removing Hezbollah from southern Lebanon, whether through force or diplomacy.
