The match got off to a heated start with Barca’s winger Raphinha being shown a red card for an elbowing incident in the first half. Getafe’s Jaime Mata joined him in the dressing room after receiving his marching orders in the second half due to accumulating two yellow cards. As tensions flared on the touchline, even Barcelona’s coach Xavi Hernandez wasn’t spared, earning a red card himself for his animated complaints.

Despite their best efforts, Barcelona struggled to break through Getafe’s solid defense, leaving both teams frustrated as the final whistle blew. This disappointing result mirrored last season’s opening campaign, as the Spanish giants once again found themselves starting their domestic journey with a goalless stalemate.

Xavi, speaking to reporters after the match, expressed his disappointment with the game’s lack of excitement. “It’s normal that people don’t want to watch football, this has barely been a game,” he commented. “A point for us is not sufficient, but this was a very difficult game for us to play.”

Barcelona’s new signings, Ilkay Gundogan, and Oriol Romeu, were handed their debuts by Xavi. The Catalans faced one of the most challenging away trips of the season as they aimed to conquer the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, a venue where they had struggled to score in their previous three visits. Getafe’s relentless pressure disrupted Barcelona’s rhythm throughout the match.

One of the talking points of the encounter was Damian Suarez’s rough challenge on former Manchester City midfielder Gundogan, which left him winded. The line between fair and foul play was repeatedly crossed, resulting in a game that was intense both in its pace and physicality.

Raphinha, who had been the standout player for Barcelona, faced multiple attempts to unsettle him before finally succumbing to frustration, delivering an elbow to Gaston Alvarez’s head and receiving a red card.

While Barcelona’s attacking prowess had been tested following Ousmane Dembele’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain, Raphinha was expected to fill the void on the right flank. However, his early exit left Barcelona in a precarious position.

In the aftermath of the match, Barcelona’s goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen reflected on the challenges they faced. “We played well, we didn’t want the match to stop so much and tried to play as quickly as possible, but it was very difficult because of the opponents,” he remarked.

Xavi made an attacking change at halftime, introducing winger Ez Abde for Andreas Christensen and reshuffling his formation. Despite the tactical shift, both teams continued to battle fiercely on the pitch.

Getafe’s Mata further leveled the playing field by receiving a second yellow card for a tackle on Ronald Araujo, reducing both teams to ten men.

As the game entered a thrilling finale, Xavi’s substitutions, including the introduction of 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and Ansu Fati, aimed to secure a late victory. However, Getafe’s resolute defense held strong, and Barcelona struggled to find the breakthrough.

The match saw extended stoppage time, with a VAR review adding more minutes to the clock due to an Araujo penalty claim. Despite the added time, the scoreline remained unchanged.

Xavi expressed his frustration with the extended stoppage time, calling for reforms in football’s timekeeping. “This is also shameful, in my opinion. With ‘effective time’ (stopping the clock) in football you put a stop to this. We’re making fools of ourselves,” he asserted.

Barcelona now finds themselves playing catch-up in the league standings, as rivals Real Madrid secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

In other La Liga action, Real Betis snatched a late victory against Villarreal through Willian Jose’s stoppage-time strike. Despite his absence from La Liga since November 2022, Betis’s Isco made a bright return to the game after his move from Sevilla.

Osasuna, last season’s Copa del Rey runners-up, started their campaign on a high note with a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo. The victory marked a successful beginning for veteran manager Rafa Benitez, who took charge of the Galicians.

The opening weekend of La Liga has set the stage for an exciting season ahead, with teams vying for dominance and surprises awaiting fans at every turn.
