Mysterious Surge in Heart Attack Deaths in Karnataka’s Hassan District

A concerning trend has emerged in heart attack deaths in Karnataka Hassan district. 22 people have died due to suspected heart attacks in just 40 days. What’s alarming is that the majority of the victims are young or middle-aged individuals. Five deaths reported among those aged 19–25 and eight deaths among those aged 25–45. Only a few of the deceased were above 60 years old.
Recent Cases
Authorities reported four deaths on June 30 alone, including:
- Lepakshi, a 50-year-old homemaker from JP Nagar in Belur, who collapsed after complaining of fatigue
- Professor Muttayya, a 58-year-old English lecturer at the Government First Grade College in Holenarasipura. He died of a sudden heart attack while having tea.
- Kumar, a 57-year-old D-Group employee from Channarayapatna, passed away after doctors hospitalized him with chest pain.
- Satyanarayana Rao, a 63-year-old resident of Rangolihalli colony, who succumbed after a sudden collapse
Investigation and Response
To investigate the surge in heart attack deaths, Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumari has formed a six-member committee, including the district health officer, the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and cardiologists. The authorities have given the committee a week to submit its report. Dr. Rajanna B., director of the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, said doctors suspected the deaths were cardiac but had confirmed a definite diagnosis in only two hospital cases.
Possible Causes and Concerns
The exact cause of the sudden deaths remains under investigation. However, experts suspect lifestyle changes, diet, and non-communicable diseases as contributing factors. The Health Ministry has directed officials to conduct a detailed study led by the Director of Jayadeva Institute, involving a team of experts, to address the alarming rise in heart attack cases.
Government Action
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed concern over the surge in heart attack deaths and ordered the formation of an expert committee to investigate the causes. The committee will submit a comprehensive report within 10 days. The government has also initiated the Puneeth Rajkumar Hridaya Jyothi scheme to prevent sudden cardiac arrests and promote heart health awareness.
