Wednesday, May 08, 2024, HD Revanna, a JD(S) MLA from Holenarsipur and the son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was placed under judicial detention for a week as declared by a special court for elected representatives, due to charges of kidnapping brought against him by the KR Nagar police in Mysuru.

Revanna was the first member of the Deve Gowda family to be detained and charged in a criminal case. Revanna sobbed as he left the courthouse and was driven straight to the Central Jail, located on the southeastern edge of the city.

As an under trial prisoner (UTP), he was assigned number 4567. The assistant chief metropolitan magistrate, Ravindra Kumar B. Kattimani, ruled the case, declaring that the Holenarasipura MLA should be detained till May 14.

He will be kept in the VIP block of Parppana Agrahara prison, given a solitary barrack without access to other undertrial inmates, with a dedicated toilet and other minimal amenities, citing safety concerns.

According to prison staff who spoke with a reporter of TOI, the MLA will spend a few days in the jail’s admissions area.

Now that Revanna’s four days in police custody came to a close earlier on Wednesday, the Special Investigation Team brought him before the judge. The Special Investigation Team asked for Revanna’s judicial detention from the court, alleging his lack of cooperation during the interrogation.

Special public prosecutor BN Jagadeesh claimed that Revanna had only responded negatively to every query while in police custody. Additionally, Jagadeesh contended that if granted bail, Revanna would influence prosecution witnesses.

The public prosecutor added that Holenarasipura Town Police had prosecuted Revanna and his son MP Prajwal Revanna as suspects in a different case. Revanna’s attorney refuted the public prosecutor’s claim and opposed judicial detention, claiming that his refusal to acknowledge his guilt did not qualify as non-cooperation. The court then asked Revanna if he had any problems while being held by the police.

Despite having a stomach ache, Revanna insisted he had done nothing wrong, that he had answered all of SIT’s questions during the previous three days of questioning. Also, Revanna informed the court that he was detained without a warrant and described his arrest as a political scheme.

Additionally, he denied giving a press conference, claiming that he had only answered questions from the media while being held by the SIT. Senior attorneys Ashok N. Naik and Jayna Kothari have been designated by the state government as special public prosecutors to represent SIT in court.
