Haveri: In a major push towards smarter policing, the Haveri police have registered 8,609 private CCTV cameras on the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS) portal to enhance crime detection and investigation. This marks a sharp rise from just 3,200 cameras mapped by March 31, following a strong public awareness drive that led to 5,409 additional cameras being added in April.
The initiative saw active participation from homeowners, shopkeepers, hotels, schools, and other establishments, allowing police quicker access to critical video footage when needed. The geo-tagging of cameras across the district ensures faster response times and more efficient resolution of criminal cases.
According to officials, the mapped cameras now cover a wide range of locations, including residential colonies, commercial areas, traffic junctions, highways, hospitals, banks, and educational institutions. Earlier, investigations often stalled due to untraceable cameras and lack of footage, giving offenders a chance to flee. The new mapping eliminates that gap, streamlining investigations and enabling swift police intervention.
Superintendent of Police Anshu Kumar Srivastava highlighted the role of these cameras in enhancing public safety and situational awareness. Even small businesses like tea stalls have been encouraged to install surveillance systems. He noted that this step has already helped crack theft cases in Ranebennur and Bankapur.
“This effort is not just about technology but about partnership,” SP Anshu Kumar stated. “With community support, we aim to make Haveri a crime-free district.”
