Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday outlined the timeline for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to elect a new national president, stating that JP Nadda’s successor will be chosen by mid-March. Puri referred to publicly available information to determine the timeline.
“We have a process. Based on information available in the public domain, the party will have a new president by mid-March,” ANI quoted Puri as saying.
The BJP’s national president election will follow the completion of elections in its state units. This process, originally set for January, was delayed due to the Delhi Assembly elections and pending elections in several state units. As per the BJP’s constitution, at least 50% of state units must elect their presidents before the national president’s election can take place. So far, only 12 out of 36 states have completed the process, requiring at least six more states to conduct their elections.
In addition to state presidents, members of the electoral college for the national president are also selected. The current president, JP Nadda, who also serves as the Union Health Minister, was initially appointed as the BJP’s acting national president on June 17, 2019. He formally assumed the role on January 20, 2020, becoming the party’s 11th national president.
Under Nadda’s leadership, the BJP contested elections in 35 states, winning in 16. The party also secured victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, securing a third consecutive term in power.
