Bhopal: A 49-year-old medical store owner in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, reportedly took his own life late Wednesday night after becoming emotionally distraught over his daughter’s decision to marry without the family’s approval.

The man, identified as Rishiraj, also known as Sanju Jaiswal, was discovered by his family in his bedroom after they heard a gunshot around 1 a.m. The bullet struck his temple, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Additional Superintendent of Police Krishna Lalchandani stated that Rishiraj’s daughter had left home approximately 15 days ago with a young man from the neighbourhood. Authorities later located her in Indore and brought her back. During a court hearing, the daughter affirmed that she was legally married and chose to remain with her husband.

According to police, Rishiraj left behind a suicide note written on a printout of his daughter’s Aadhaar card, in which he conveyed deep emotional pain over her marriage against the family’s wishes.

In the note, he reportedly wrote, “Harshita, you did wrong. I’m leaving. I could have ended both your lives, but how could I harm my daughter?”

The note also included personal thoughts on parental rights and questioned the legal process that allowed the marriage. He criticised the lawyer involved, asking, “Doesn’t he have daughters too? Can’t he understand a father’s pain? One entire family has been destroyed.”

He further questioned the legitimacy of Arya Samaj marriages and expressed disbelief that the court permitted his daughter to live with her husband. “This has shattered our entire family. No one understood my suffering,” the note read.

Additional Superintendent of Police Niranjan Sharma described the incident as deeply tragic, noting that Rishiraj’s daughter had married someone from another community, and the suicide note reflected his emotional distress. Senior officers have visited the site.

Rishiraj owned Babu Medical Store in the Naka Chandrabadni area and resided near the Bhairo Baba temple. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. Police confirmed that he appeared emotionally disturbed in the days leading up to the incident.

A forensic team visited the scene on Thursday as part of the ongoing investigation.

Tensions flared in the area following the suicide. Rishiraj’s relatives allegedly attacked the father of the man who married his daughter, dragging him from his house and beating him until he lost consciousness. Local residents intervened and took the injured man to a hospital.
