Gwalior Airport has attained building excellence with the unique use of environmentally friendly zinc components. The inauguration of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport in Gwalior marks a remarkable example of innovative architecture and meticulous planning.

Under the leadership of Prof. Charanjit S. Shah and Ar. Gurpreet S. Shah from Creative Group, the airport project was completed in an impressive 16 months, showcasing exceptional teamwork and dedication.

The airport’s architectural features stand out with a sleek, modern terminal building designed with eco-friendly elements that redefine excellence in construction. Notably, the airport sets a new standard for environmentally responsible building practices, utilising sustainable technologies such as solar panels, and leveraging zinc’s eco-friendly properties alongside rainwater collection systems.

Zinc’s high reflectivity is a standout feature, reducing heat absorption and negating the need for extensive cooling systems, thereby minimizing energy consumption. Additionally, the lightweight nature of zinc panels simplifies installation, reduces structural stress, and enhances the airport’s overall sustainability profile.

“The achievement of the Gwalior Airport project demonstrates the strength of teamwork and creativity. Our dedication to pushing the frontiers of innovation and sustainability led to the use of zinc, a versatile metal with a long history stretching back to ancient civilizations, in the airport’s architectural components. Dr. Rahul Sharma, director (India) of the International Zinc Association, underlined the importance of infrastructure in propelling a country’s development. India’s infrastructure is expanding dramatically as a result of government initiatives and major projects. According to CECRI, corrosion costs India between 3 and 4 percent of its GDP each year. Driven by the need to ensure the lifetime and preservation of a nation’s important infrastructure, the International Zinc Association promotes the use of durable and proven corrosion protection measures, such as structural galvanization, in all its construction.

Apart from its aesthetic appeal, zinc plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable construction practices at Gwalior Airport. Its longevity, corrosion resistance, and recyclability are consistent with the airport’s dedication to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency.
