The Gujarat High Court has stayed the release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut movie ‘Maharaj’, which was supposed to be released on Netflix today, on 14th June. The HC denied releasing the debut movie of Junaid Khan to Netflix on the appeal of the Hindu Group, which is known as Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). The VHP group stated that the release of the movie can incite violence in the nation as it is against Lord Krishna, Vallabhacharya’s followers, and Hindu devotees.

The film was to be released today, but now HC, after hearing a petition, has postponed the release of the movie till the 18th of June 2024. Advocate J Sai Deepak is fighting the case for VHP and against the casting of the movie, whereas 26 lawyers are fighting for the movie release on behalf of film producer Yash Raj. The main characters in Yash Raj’s film ‘Maharaj’ whom audiences can watch after the Court order date are Junaid Khan, Shalini Pandey, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Sharvari Wagh.

The plea from the Krishna devotees says that the film is being tried to release without its trailer and lack of promotional materials, which can not only hurt devotees but also other people who believe in Hindu Gods. They say that such movies are a direct attack on devotees, and this will hurt religious sentiments. After hearing the plea, the Gujarat Court justice Sangeeta Vishen passed an order to stay the film’s release at any cost. She further said, “It makes seriously blasphemous comments against Lord Krishna as well as devotional songs and hymns.” The case has been scheduled to hear a plea on 18th June.

The film is based on the real story of Maharaj’s libel case of 1861. ‘Maharaj’ is the long story of Karsandas Mulji, who was a journalist, social reformer, and a pioneer advocate for women’s rights. He wrote on widows’ remarriage and protected oppressed people. Mulji published a series of articles in 1861 that talked about Maharaj’s engagement in sexual misconduct with devotees’ women under the guise of ritual.

According to the VHP and Krishna’s devotees, Mulji was the real devotee of Lord Krishna; he also fought for the rights of widows and women’s rights and was against the miscreant Maharaj. HC has sent a direct notice to Netflix and Yash Raj Films (YRF) against releasing the movie before the court order. Although YRF has no comments and no response for the same matter, and also from Netflix, there are no comments on the stay of the movie.
