Bijnor: A customary wedding ritual in Garhmalpur village, Bijnor, took a violent turn when a disagreement broke out during the ‘joota churai’ ceremony, where the bride’s sisters demanded ₹50,000 from the groom’s side to return his shoes.

The tradition, common in Indian weddings, involves the bride’s sisters hiding the groom’s shoes and asking for money in return. In this case, the groom’s family, who came from Chakrauta in Dehradun, offered ₹5,000 as a symbolic gesture. However, matters escalated after the groom, Mohammad Sabir, reportedly scolded the bride’s sister, prompting her to insult him by calling him a “beggar”.

Tensions boiled over, with the bride’s family allegedly locking Sabir and his father, Nisar Ahmed, in a room and assaulting them with sticks. The wedding was brought to a halt, and the police were called in to mediate.
Both families lodged complaints against each other, with the bride’s family accusing the groom’s side of dowry demands and claiming a cheque of ₹2 lakh had been issued under pressure. Meanwhile, Sabir alleged he was attacked by the bride’s relatives.

Najibabad SHO Jai Bhagwan confirmed that cross-complaints had been filed and an investigation was underway. Sabir, who owns a salon in Dehradun, told the police that the clash stemmed from the shoe-stealing ritual and that he left the wedding venue without the bride. Efforts are ongoing to resolve the conflict between the families.
