The Greek coastguards have been accused of throwing dozens of migrants into the sea, many of whom died in the past three years. According to the report published by the BBC, over 40 migrants on small boats died due to Greek coastguards’ actions, which included forcing damaged vessels back to the sea. Several allegations have been made in the past against Greek coastguards for being involved in severe human rights violations among the migrants or illegal immigrants from Africa, Syria, Egypt, and Pakistan.
Under the BBC investigation, it was revealed that more than 40 migrants died due to Greek coastguards’ actions between 2020-2023. Some of the migrants claim that they are being poorly beaten and sometimes thrown out of small boats into the sea by Greek coastguards, which results in the death of many migrants. Sometimes they are sent back in defective, faulty boats so that they could die in the ocean, as said by a Syrian man.
Meanwhile, the majority of the migrants’ popular destination is to reach Italy or Greece so that they could live a better life. This illegal immigration crisis led to a huge outrage among the locals inside the European countries whose lives have been affected eminently. They seek asylum, as they say it is their right to seek asylum, but due to huge illegal immigration, European countries are facing several policy failures. They are not able to fulfill the basic requirements of their own people due to population burden. Robbery, theft, and murder are increasing day by day. Public places are full of these illegal immigrants.
However, the Greek government declined the report of harsh treatment of migrants and the illegal pushback of asylum seekers. But the illegal immigration crisis in Europe is shaping a face of anger among the local Europeans. To tackle this, the United Kingdom approved controversial legislation in April that allows the government to send some asylum-seekers to Rwanda with deportation flights, which are expected to start soon.
