Greece made history on Thursday by becoming the first Christian Orthodox country to legalize same-sex marriages and equal parental rights. The bill was passed in the Greek parliament with a significant majority of 176 votes in the 300-seat parliament.

With this landmark move, Greece also joins the ranks as the 16th European Union nation and the 36th in the world to allow same-sex marriages. However, the decision faced fierce opposition from the country’s powerful Orthodox Church, leading to protests in Athens and stirring mixed feelings among the populace.

In addition to recognizing same-sex marriages, the legalization paves the way for adoption and grants equal rights to both same-sex parents as a child’s legal guardian. Previously, such rights only applied to the biological parent. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the impact on daily life for same-sex couples, highlighting the ability to attend to children’s needs such as collecting them from school and seeking medical care.

Following a two-day debate, the bill passed in the Greek parliament with 176 votes in favor and 76 against. Prime Minister Mitsotakis celebrated the decision on social media, describing the new law as “a milestone for human rights.”
