As the rescue mission at Silkyara, Uttarakhand, enters its tenth day with 41 workers trapped inside a tunnel, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued guidance to private television channels on their coverage of the ongoing operations. The directive, based on a PTI report, emphasizes the need for cautious and sensitive reporting during this delicate situation.

The advisory urges channels to exercise tact and moderation in their reporting of the rescue operations, particularly in the dissemination of news articles and videos. It underscores the emotional states of the workers’ families and the potentially adverse impact insensitive reporting could have on them.

Expressing concern about the negative effects, the advisory strongly cautions against airing any video or photos from the rescue site. It emphasizes the potential interference media presence might cause in the ongoing rescue efforts, urging channels to avoid sensationalizing the issue.

Moreover, the government urges restraint in conducting live broadcasts or capturing videos in close proximity to the tunnel site. The directive highlights the need to ensure that the activities of agencies engaged in the life-saving operations remain uninterrupted and unaffected by media personnel or equipment.

The emphasis on sensitive reporting underscores the importance of respecting the delicate nature of the rescue mission and prioritizing the psychological well-being of the affected families and general viewership.

Reports from Tuesday morning indicate some relief for the trapped workers’ families as a newly inserted six-inch pipeline eased communication. Family members stated that they could now hear their trapped relatives clearly through this pipeline, which will also facilitate sending larger quantities of goods inside.

The rescue efforts commenced after a landslide on November 12 trapped the workers behind a significant debris mound in the Silkyara tunnel, a crucial part of the Char Dham all-weather road project of the central government, situated 30 km from Uttarkashi.

With inputs from PTI, the rescue operations continue amid heightened efforts and cautious reporting, focusing on ensuring the safety and successful retrieval of the trapped workers.
