The BJP-led Central Government on Friday declared that June 25 will be observed as the ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ every year to mark the imposition of the emergency.

On June 25, 1975, the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, which resulted in the suspension of most civil liberties for more than two years.

“When the emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi government misused the power and declared an emergency on the nation, and the people of India were subjected to excesses and atrocities.” The government’s notification was shared by Home Minister Amit Shah.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, in his posts on the X platform, said that on June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced. The government has decided to observe June 25 every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas.’ This day will commemorate the massive contributions of all those who endured the inhuman pains of the 1975 Emergency.

On June 25, PM Modi said those who imposed the emergency have no right to profess their love for the Constitution. His remark came a day after the opposition staged a protest inside the Lok Sabha by holding out copies of the Constitution.

The Prime Minister said this day will “serve as a reminder and a day to pay homage to those who suffered during the emergency.”

The Union Home Minister said that the decision made by the government led by PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji is intended to honour the spirit of millions who struggled to revive democracy despite facing inexplicable persecution at the hands of an oppressive government.

The observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will help keep the external flame of individual freedom and the defence of our democracy alive in every Indian, thus preventing dictatorial forces like the Congress from repeating those horrors.

“Yet another headline-grabbing exercise in hypocrisy by the non-biological PM who had imposed an undeclared emergency for ten long years before the people of India handed him a decisive personal, political, and moral defeat on June 4, 2024—which will go down in history as “Modi Mukti Diwas,””Jairam Ramesh said.
