The Google Pixel 8 series has been named the best smartphone of 2023 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC). The award acknowledges the phone’s outstanding performance, innovation, and leadership in the technology industry.
The Google Pixel 8 series was named the best smartphone of 2023 at MWC. This flagship series received the prize for outstanding performance, creativity, and leadership. The Pixel 8 outperformed other candidates, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 series, to take the top spot.
The prize was given during the Global Mobile Awards ceremony at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which GSMA hosted. This annual event recognizes technological achievements in different categories, like “Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough” and “Best Mobile Network Infrastructure.” In the “Device” category, Google secured the biggest “Best Smartphone” award.
The GSMA provides an overview of the award’s criteria: “The Best Smartphone Award acknowledges outstanding performance, innovation, and leadership, as assessed by leading independent analysts, journalists, and influencers, based on smartphones available in the market from January 2023 to December 2023.”
The Pixel 8 series was named the greatest smartphone lineup of 2023, beating out strong competition such as the iPhone 15 Pro series, OnePlus Open, Samsung Galaxy S23 series, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Sharing the big win, Rick Osterloh, who is Senior Vice President overseeing Google’s Devices & Services efforts, posted on Twitter/ now X and wrote, “Thrilled about Pixel 8 winning another important Phone of the Year award at MWC! @madebygoogle thank you to the entire Pixel user community for helping us get there, and congratulations to our team for great progress.”
Interestingly, the Google Pixel 8 series drew notice last year for its new updates and AI innovation. The series is powered by Google’s latest Tensor G3 CPU and includes the stock Android experience, a powerful camera for excellent photo and video quality, and game-changing editing features. The phone has been praised as one of the finest performers for everyday tasks and short gaming sessions.

Nonetheless, this year marked the first time that Google Pixel has managed to claim the title of the best smartphone. Last year, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro was hailed as the best, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max winning the year prior. In 2021, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was crowned the best phone. Even the Pixel 6 Pro made it to the shortlist in 2021, and the Pixel 3’s Night Sight feature won a GSMA award for “Disruptive Device Innovation” in 2019.
