A senior doctor at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has refused to accept the apology offered by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who publicly humiliated him last week. Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, the casualty medical officer, insists that the minister’s apology is insufficient and demands a public apology at the hospital where the incident occurred.
The Incident
The controversy began when Dr. Kuttikar refused to administer a Vitamin B12 injection to the mother-in-law of a journalist, citing that the casualty department only handles serious emergencies. The journalist then called Minister Rane, who arrived at the hospital, suspended Dr. Kuttikar, and humiliated him in front of patients and staff.
Minister’s Apology Rejected
Despite Rane’s apology, Dr. Kuttikar and the medical community are not satisfied. “I’ve seen the video. It is a studio apology. We, all the doctors, demand that the apology be given where the incident happened, in front of the patients,” Dr. Kuttikar said. The Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) and the Faculty Doctors Association have backed Dr. Kuttikar’s demand and held a protest on Monday to support him.
Demands from the Government
The doctors’ associations are seeking a firm assurance from the government that healthcare professionals will not be subjected to such degrading treatment in the future. They also demand an end to VIP culture in clinical settings, where treatment should be based on medical urgency rather than social or political status.
“We have sworn an oath to serve patients, and we do so tirelessly. However, we cannot and will not stand by while the dignity of our profession is trampled upon,” Dr. Kuttikar added, emphasizing the need for respect and professionalism in healthcare.
