West Bengal: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced sharp criticism from the family of a Kolkata rape and murder victim over her remarks about Durga Puja celebrations. The mother of the trainee doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College, condemned Banerjee for urging the public to shift their attention from the protests to Durga Puja festivities. Calling the chief minister’s comments insensitive, she said, “Durga Puja was celebrated in our home too; my daughter used to organize it herself. But we will never celebrate Durga Puja again. The light in my home has gone out.”

She added, “How can I ask people to return to the festival? Let her return our daughter first. If such a tragedy had happened in the chief minister’s own family, would she have made such a statement?” This reaction came after Mamata Banerjee encouraged people to “return to festivities” with Durga Puja approaching and urged junior doctors to resume their duties as soon as possible.

The victim’s mother also refuted Banerjee’s denial of offering financial compensation to the family. “The chief minister is lying. My daughter will not come back. Why would I lie in her name? The CM told us we would receive money and suggested we create something in our daughter’s memory. I replied that I would come to her office to collect the money once my daughter gets justice,” she told ANI. She further stated that her family would continue their fight until justice is served. The victim’s cousin also supported this claim, saying that Mamata Banerjee had personally offered financial compensation to the family.

“The chief minister herself offered financial compensation. She denied that the money was offered by the police. I stand by my statement that the chief minister made the offer,” the cousin said. On August 9, the body of a postgraduate doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The autopsy revealed that she had been raped and murdered. The doctor’s family alleged that the Kolkata Police and the chief minister tried to offer them money after the victim’s body was returned to them, a claim that the state government has denied.
