Four U.S. University Tutors Brutally Stabbed in China Park
On Monday, four U.S. university tutors were brutally stabbed by an unknown assailant in a public park in China. Currently, the four tutors are hospitalised and under observation.
The Iowa Cornell College instructors, who were teaching as part of a partnership with a local university, were seriously “injured in an accident” while visiting the park in Jilin Province, China. According to Jonathan Brand, the president of Cornell College, the four instructors were accompanied by a faculty member of Beihua University, Cornell’s partner in Jilin City in northern China.
The details of the attack remain unclear. It is not known whether the instructors were intentionally targeted or if the attack was premeditated. A spokesperson for the State Department said U.S. officials are monitoring reports of the attack but have not yet released further information.
In a video posted on Chinese social media, nearly three people were seen severely injured and lying on the ground covered in blood. Iowa Representative Adam Zabner said his brother David Zabner, one of the four instructors, is severely injured. He added that the group was visiting a local temple when a man suddenly attacked them with a knife. David Zabner was stabbed in the arm at Beishan Park.
Chinese officials have not yet responded to the incident. However, images of the incident are going viral on the internet. On Tuesday, searches for “Foreigners Jilin” showed no results on the internet, but many users are discussing relevant topics, with some asking for more information about the incident.
China and the USA have recently sought to bolster their educational ties to stabilize their deteriorating relationship by exchanging people-to-people interactions. President Xi Jinping has unveiled a plan to invite 50,000 young Americans to teach in China over the next five years.
However, Chinese diplomats say a travel advisory by the U.S. State Department has discouraged Americans from traveling to China due to an exit ban that could prevent Americans from leaving the country. As a result, most American universities have suspended their programs in Chinese universities.
