Days of heavy rain resulted in massive flooding in Guangdong, China’s most populous province. Authorities have evacuated more than 60,000 people from their homes in Guangdong.

Videos on state media and the internet depict vast areas of land submerged under the floods, with rescuers transporting people in waist-deep water on lifeboats.

According to state media, three people have died and 11 are missing.

Several major rivers have overflowed their banks, and authorities are monitoring the dangerously high water levels.

Due to the continuous heavy rain, flights at Baiyun International Airport have been delayed or cancelled, and schools in three cities have been ordered to remain closed.

Dozens of houses in the province have collapsed or been damaged, resulting in a direct loss of 140.6 million yuan, officials estimate.

On Monday morning, they issued a warning that a river in northern Guangdong may reach a “once in 100 years” peak.

According to the province, 1.6 million homes lost their electricity over the weekend, but 80% of them have already reconnected by Sunday.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in Guangdong and neighboring Fujian coastal areas until at least Tuesday, according to Chinese meteorological authorities.

Other parts of the country, such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, can expect “moderate to heavy” rain.
