The Sealdah court in Kolkata, West Bengal, is set to announce its verdict on Saturday, January 18, in the case of the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident triggered widespread protests among doctors and others nationwide, raising significant concerns. The judgement, expected 57 days after the trial began, will be delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. The in-camera trial, which started on November 12, included testimonies from 50 witnesses and concluded on January 9.

The primary accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, was arrested by Kolkata police on August 10, a day after the victim’s body was discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A Bluetooth earphone found near the body, along with CCTV footage showing Roy entering the seminar hall with the device around his neck, led to his arrest. The case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following strong criticism by the Calcutta High Court regarding the police’s and state government’s handling of the case’s aftermath. The CBI has sought the death penalty for Roy.

Additionally, the CBI arrested former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijeet Mondal for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence related to the case. Ghosh is also being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over financial irregularities during his tenure, as flagged by a CBI case. Both Ghosh and Mondal were granted bail after the agency failed to file a chargesheet within the mandated 90 days.

This alleged crime sparked nationwide protests, prompting demands for a national law to safeguard medical professionals on duty. It also led to a prolonged standoff between the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government and protesting doctors across the state, highlighting critical concerns about workplace safety and security in the medical field.
