Maintaining its surprise streaks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the name of Bhajan Lal Sharma as the next Chief Minister of Rajasthan. He is an MLA from Sanganer. Sharma, 56, is a first-time MLA from Sanganer Assembly in Jaipur. He had defeated Pushpendra Bhardwaj of Congress by 48,081 votes.
Sharma was named the chief minister on Tuesday following the BJP legislature party meeting in Jaipur, in the presence of the party’s three central observers led by Rajnath Singh. The other two observers were Vinod Tawde and Saroj Pandey. At the meeting, Raje, who was seated next to Rajnath, had proposed Sharma’s name, which was accepted by party MLAs.
He is considered close to both the Sangh and the organization, which is considered to have played an important role in getting this post. According to the affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Sharma declared assets worth Rs 1.5 crore, which include Rs 43.6 lakh in moveable assets and Rs 1 crore in immovable assets. Sharma has served as the BJP’s Rajasthan General Secretary four times. He has an MA in politics from Rajasthan University.
Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party president J P Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and other party leaders, CM-elect Sharma, in brief remarks, said, “I want to assure that this Rajasthan team, along with all our MLAs, will carry out all-round development of Rajasthan under the leadership of PM Modi.”
Balancing the caste equations here too, apart from a Brahmin CM in Sharma, the party has also announced two deputies, which include Diya Kumari, a Rajput who hails from the erstwhile Jaipur royal family, while Bairwa is a Dalit. Vasudev Devnani hails from the Sindhi community.
