The first convoy of humanitarian aid trucks entered Gaza today, bringing a glimmer of hope to a region mired in a devastating crisis. The aid shipment arrived from the Egyptian region, marking the first such entry since Israel imposed a catastrophic siege on Gaza 12 days ago.

Joe Biden, the U.S. President, had stated earlier this week that a truce had been reached to allow the 20 humanitarian aid trucks to travel across the border of Rafah and further added on Friday that he had confidence that the first trucks would cross through within the next 48 hours.

Out of the 20 trucks, 15 were on the side of Gaza’s laboriously secured border following inspection by the Palestinian Red Crescent and were getting ready to advance to the citizens in populated regions, as reported by witnesses, following days of diplomatic bickering concerning the circumstances of supplying the relief aid.

However that would only bring relief to a very small section of people in Gaza as Israel’s “total siege” has resulted in 2.3 million Palestinians running out of food, water, medicines, and fuel in what the United Nations has termed a “budding humanitarian catastrophe.”

The United Nations made a statement that the trucks contained vitalizing aid that the Palestinian Red Crescent would collect and then distribute. The delivery was inclusive of medicine and a restricted amount of food, but unfortunately, it did not contain fuel, as stated by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist group ruling Gaza.

The Palestinian health officers stated that the shortage of fuel was endangering the lives of victims, including those hurt by the air strikes. So far, 14 medical centers have already stopped operations due to the lack of fuel.

No less than a convoy of 100 trucks is required every day for emergency needs, and any aid operation needs to be viable at scale—a tall order due to Israel executing catastrophic attacks on the region day and night, as stated by U.N. officials.
