On Monday, a fire broke out on the second floor in the Endoscopy room under the Gastroenterology department, which is above the emergency ward of the hospital. All the patients and staff were evacuated safely from the spot, and no casualties were reported in the hospital. “When the fire broke out, two patients were undergoing a procedure in the endoscopy room. These two patients, along with around 90 others in the waiting area, were evacuated,” a senior doctor said. However, the reason for the outbreak of the fire is still unknown. Although the Electrical and Civil Enquiry of the Main Hospital was also informed for coordination related to electrical supply as well as HVAC supply to other connected areas, necessary steps on the plan of evacuation, and admission procedures, including emergency services, were taken. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Hospital, also visited the spot, and security and firefighting teams are investigating the incident to find out the cause.

Regarding the visuals, black smoke was seen coming out of the spot at 11:54 a.m. More than 8 water tenders were used, along with the hospital’s underground water, to douse the flames. The situation was under control by around 1 p.m. The Endoscopy room at AIIMS Delhi was closed until further orders, but the emergency room was re-opened by the evening. Services like the ICU, Emergency, and Endoscopy in the building were affected due to the fire. As a result, patients coming to the hospital are being directed to Safdarjung Hospital in the meantime.

There have been numerous incidents of fire in the hospital, out of which the major one was witnessed in 2019. During that time, the fire spread from the first to the fifth floor, but luckily, no major casualties were reported. Despite such incidents, the management had not taken the essential steps to ensure the safety of the staff and patients.
