On the morning of April 2nd, a tragic incident unfolded at a secondary school in southern Finland when a 12-year-old student opened fire, resulting in the death of one student and serious injuries to two others, according to police reports. Subsequently, authorities managed to apprehend the suspect.

Following the distressing event, heavily armed police swiftly cordoned off the Viertola school premises. This educational institution, encompassing both lower and upper secondary schools and accommodating approximately 800 students, is situated in Vantaa, just on the outskirts of the capital city, Helsinki. The authorities’ response was prompt, initiated after receiving a call reporting the shooting incident at 9:08 a.m. local time. Police identified both the suspect and victims as 12 year olds.

During a news conference, Chief of Police Ilkka Koskimäki from the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department disclosed that one of the students tragically succumbed to their injuries instantly upon being shot, while the other two sustained serious wounds. According to Detective Inspector Kimmo Hyvärinen, the firearm used in the shooting was a registered handgun, legally owned by a relative of the suspect.

Police swiftly detained the suspect in the Helsinki area less than an hour after the shooting occurred, with a handgun found in his possession. In an initial police interrogation, the suspect admitted to the shooting. However, authorities have yet to ascertain the motive behind the incident. The case is currently under investigation and is being treated as a murder case, with two additional counts of attempted murder.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo offered condolences to the families of the victims in posts on X with both saying they were shocked over the shooting. “What makes it particularly shocking is the age of the victim and the suspect,” Mr. Orpo said during a news conference later on April 2. “I can assure you that this (shooting) will be carefully reviewed and conclusions will be drawn that this will not happen again.”
