BENGALURU: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for India to establish itself as a nation embracing responsible capitalism.
Speaking at the India Ideas Conclave 2024 in Bengaluru on Friday, she stated, “Capitalism has its limitations, and it is crucial to brand India as a responsible capitalist country—one that prioritizes the welfare of its people and ensures its institutions fulfill their roles.”
Sitharaman highlighted how Indian society has historically practiced resource utilization driven by necessity rather than excess, a behavior shaped more by economic constraints than environmental awareness.
She also voiced concerns about certain elements within economic systems that call for innovative thinking to redefine the Bharat identity. The minister pointed out challenges such as expansionism, exploitation, and aggression that need to be addressed.
