FBI Director Christopher Wray has raised concerns about the looming threat posed by Chinese-linked hackers, who are reportedly waiting for the ‘right moment’ to attack US infrastructure. Speaking at the 2024 Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats, Wray highlighted the need for federal authorities to counter this imminent danger.

Wray emphasised that China views every sector critical to American society as fair game in its quest for global dominance. He warned that Chinese hackers could target civilian infrastructure to induce panic and weaken America’s resolve.

The FBI director specifically mentioned China’s potential interest in preparing for a crisis involving China and Taiwan by 2027. He revealed that China has been aggressively stealing intellectual property, technology, and research from major American industries, including at least 23 pipeline operators.

“The fact is, the PRC’s targeting of our critical infrastructure is both broad and unrelenting,” Wray stated. He highlighted a recent cyberattack where Chinese hackers bypassed financial data to access infrastructure controls, indicating more sinister motives.

Law enforcement, military, and intelligence agencies are collaborating to prevent such attacks. Wray urged companies to proactively engage with the FBI to enhance readiness and response capabilities.

This warning echoes Wray’s earlier caution to the House Select Committee in February about the vulnerability of the electrical grid, oil and gas pipelines, transportation systems, and water treatment plants to Chinese cyberattacks.
