In a recent interview with The Hindustan Times, Fatima Sana Shaikh opened up about being compared with Kangna Ranaut as both are playing the role of Indira Gandhi in their latest films, “Sam Bahadur” and “Emergency” respectively. She accepted it with a smile and responded gracefully, “Each of us has our own unique portrayal of the characters we play. She admits that she may have handled things differently if she were in their position, but ultimately believes that as long as the spirit of the character is captured, there is no right or wrong way to act.”
The actor continues by reacting to Kangana’s appearance in the teaser for Emergency. “I’ve seen it; it was excellent. Everyone, I believe, enjoyed it. Not a single person that I can recall disliked it. Her appearance was uncanny due to her flawless hair and cosmetics.”
Fatima explained how she used books, manuscripts, and a tonne of research to get ready for Sam Bahadur. Her interest in Indian history has grown. “I read a lot about Indira before I played her in Sam Bahadur.” Kangana is portraying Indira from a much earlier era. I have played her in the past; she was quite young. Her story is fascinating.
In conversation, she praised and credited director Meghna Gulzar for bringing the best out of her in the film as former PM Indira Gandhi. She sportingly responded to her co-actor Vickey Kaushal overshadowing her performance with his commendable transformation as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw by saying, “It’s not wrong at all; this is not Indira Gandhi’s film; it’s Sam Bahadur’s. About the movie, we are honoring his contributions to the nation. In essence, he encountered a great deal of individuals, and each of them made a positive impact on his life. There are additional nuances and depths to his persona. There is an arc for every other character, no matter how little. It will never have as many layers as the protagonist, of course.”
Fatima was all over Vicky Kaushal, his co-star, and the entire film crew. “Vicky’s portrayal of Sam Bahar is simply amazing. Meghna is really intelligent; all I had to do was assist her and be honest with her. Ultimately, the movie is hers, and she is aware of the kind of appearance she wants to have for Indira. It is not flawed in any way.”
