New Delhi: The father of Jyoti Malhotra, the YouTuber arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan, expressed shock over her activities, stating he had no knowledge of her visits to the neighbouring country or her social media presence.
Harish Malhotra, Jyoti’s father, told ANI that his daughter, who ran the YouTube channel ‘Travel with JO’ (with nearly 400,000 subscribers), never disclosed her Pakistan trips. “She told me she was going to Delhi. I had no idea,” he said, retracting his earlier statement that she had visited Pakistan for video shoots.
Jyoti, 33, was arrested last week for allegedly sharing Indian military intelligence with Pakistan. Police revealed she had contact with a Pakistan High Commission official and visited Pakistan at least twice. Her YouTube channel featured videos like ‘Indian Girl in Pakistan’ and ‘Indian Girl Exploring Lahore’, among over 450 uploads.
Investigators are probing her visits to Kashmir before the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack (which killed 26) and her earlier trips to Pakistan. Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan stated that Pakistani operatives were grooming her as an asset. She reportedly communicated with a Pakistani intelligence officer during the India-Pakistan military standoff following the attack.
Jyoti is among 12 individuals recently arrested for alleged spying for Pakistan, amid heightened tensions after the Pahalgam attack. India’s Operation Sindoor (May 7) targeted terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, prompting retaliatory strikes before a May 10 ceasefire.
