Farmers, Seeking Guarantee on MSP and Loan Waivers, Prepare to Resume Their ‘Delhi Chalo’ Protest Today
On Friday, a group of farmers attempted to march towards Delhi from their protest site at the Shambhu border but were halted just a few meters away by barricades.
Two days after pausing their ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation, protesting farmers are gearing up to once again attempt entering Delhi from the Shambhu border, situated between Punjab and Haryana, to press for their demands. These demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
On Friday, December 6, a group of 101 farmers, referred to as “marjeevras” (those ready to die for the cause), began their march towards Delhi but were stopped a few meters from the Shambhu border by multilayered barricades set up by Haryana security personnel. The protest was called off later that day after several farmers were reportedly injured during tear gas shelling at the border. According to farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, five to six protesters sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital.
The farmers, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, when security forces blocked their initial march to Delhi. During a press conference on Friday, the leaders announced that a group of 101 farmers would resume the march on December 8 at 12 noon if the Centre fails to initiate talks by the following day. Speaking at the Shambhu border, Pandher reiterated their willingness to wait for discussions but affirmed the march would proceed if talks did not occur.
In response, the Haryana government suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district until December 9, impacting areas like Dangdehri, Lohgarh, Manakpur, and others.
