Farmers’ Protest Escalates: BKU Declares ‘Black Friday’ in Mourning, Tractor March Planned Amid Ongoing Protests
On Thursday, the leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) party, Rakesh Tikait, announced the observation of a ‘Black Friday’ on February 23, 2024, to mourn the loss of a farmer’s death at the Khanauri Border. Following this, he also declared to hold a Tractor march on February 26th.
The ongoing farmers’ protest took a drastic turn after the demise of a 21-year-old farmer named Shubhkaran Singh from Bathinda. The farmer sustained injuries after being shot by a bullet during clashes between Security officials and farmers at the Khanauri Border. Shubhkaran was among the 15 farmers from his village to join the ‘Delhi Chalo March’ after also being previously associated with the 2021 farmers’ protest.
The Haryana police claimed that the farmers attacked the authority officials with sticks and stones, while the farmers asserted the police officials fired bullets and tear gas at the protestors. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced financial aid of Rupees 1 Crore for the family of Shubhkaran. The farmer’s sister will be getting a government job along with legal action taken for the tragic demise of the farmer.
Several negotiations and talks have been conducted between the Government and the Protesters to reach a beneficial conclusion. However, despite holding many rounds of talks with the farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda stated on Thursday that more work has to be done by all parties to come to an agreement. He went on to reaffirm the central government’s resolve to advance farmers’ interests.
