A woman and a self-proclaimed tantrik have been arrested after the woman allegedly threw her two-year-old son into the Agra Canal, believing he was a ‘jinn’ who would destroy her family, police said on Tuesday.
The arrested woman, Megha, resides in Sainik Colony, while the tantrik, identified as Mita Bhatia, is originally from Bhagatpur in West Bengal and currently lives in the same locality. According to a police spokesperson, Megha was influenced by Mita, who convinced her that the child was born from a ‘jinn’ and posed a threat to her family.
Following the incident, police recovered the child’s body from the Agra Canal with the help of divers. After a postmortem, the body was handed over to the father.
During questioning, Mita admitted to practicing ‘tantra-mantra vidya’ and said Megha frequently visited her. She reportedly told Megha that her son was a supernatural entity and would bring ruin to the family. Acting on this belief, Megha threw the child into the canal on Sunday evening.
Both women were presented in court and have been sent to judicial custody. An FIR was filed at BPTP Police Station in connection with the case.
