Famous Radio Host and Geetmala’s Voice, Ameen Sayani, Passed Away at the Age of 91

Popular former radio broadcaster Ameen Sayani gained recognition and popularity for his program Binaca Geetmala throughout the Indian Subcontinent. Tuesday was the day of his death. Ameen Sayani, 91, died in Mumbai on Tuesday from a heart attack. Rajil Sayani, his father’s son, confirmed to Indianexpress.com that his father had died. The renowned radio host of Binaca Geetmala was well-known. The family has scheduled Sayani’s burial for this Thursday as they wait for certain relatives to arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Son confirms the death of Ameen Sayani

At the age of 91, renowned radio host Ameen Sayani passed away. Rajil Sayani said his father died of a heart attack on Tuesday night at HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai. “The hospital’s doctors attended to him, but they were unable to save him, so he was pronounced dead,” he said to the portal.

The career of Ameen Sayani

Ameen Sayani, born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, was a household name for years, mesmerizing audiences with his lovely voice and engaging personality. He began his career as an English-language broadcaster before switching to Hindi following India’s independence. Sayani rose to prominence with his radio program ‘Geetmala’, which was instrumental in popularizing radio listening in India.

Geetmala, presented by Sayani, became a national hit, showcasing popular Hindi cinema music and enthralling audiences for decades. His distinctive greeting, “Behno aur Bhaiyo” (sisters and brothers), became instantly recognizable and frequently replicated. His radio introduction, “Namaskar bhaiyon aur behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon (Hello sisters and brothers, this is your buddy Ameen Sayani)”, still evokes great memories.

Ameen was well-known for his show Binaca Geetmala, which aired for more than 42 years starting in 1952 and primarily on Radio Ceylon and thereafter Vividh Bharati (AIR).

Since 1951, Ameen Sayani has created, produced, or spoken for over 54,000 radio broadcasts, as well as 19,000 advertisements and jingles. Sayani has appeared in several films, including Boxer, Teen Devian, Bhoot Bungla, and Qatl. He appeared in each of these films, occasionally announcing events.

Social media is inundated with condolences to Ameen Sayani, who helped All India Radio succeed in India. “Binaca Geetmala would endure forever. I’m grateful for the memories and music. RIP, Ameen Sayani Saab,” a fan said on Twitter. “I have very fond memories of Binaca Geetmala during my childhood,” another person commented. “At the time, Ameen Sayani was a legend. Peace be with you, sir.”
