Varanasi: Families of 14 individuals jailed in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old girl by 23 men between March 29 and April 4 submitted a memorandum at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency office on Tuesday, asserting that the accusations are baseless and demanding justice.
Among the protestors was the girl’s friend, who claimed the survivor had stayed at her house during those seven days. She identified one of the accused, Raj Vishwakarma, as her brother and maintained that the charges against him were false.
Earlier, on April 17, Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal had set up a special investigation team after the accused’s families met him and submitted alleged evidence supporting their claims. On Tuesday, the group marched to Modi’s constituency office in Jawahar Nagar. Though initially halted by a heavy police presence, they were eventually allowed to proceed, and ACP Bhelupur received their memorandum.
The case was filed on April 5 by the girl’s family, alleging that she had been drugged and raped by 23 men over a span of seven days. An FIR was registered against all 23 accused, including 12 who were identified by name. As of Wednesday, 14 arrests had been made. During a medical examination, the survivor was found to be infected with hepatitis B.
Prime Minister Modi, during his visit to Varanasi on April 11, had sought a detailed report from the police regarding the progress of the case.
