Nestled in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, India, there exists a place so enchanting that it has earned the moniker “Mini Switzerland.” Khajjiar, with its breathtaking landscapes and verdant meadows, is a hidden gem that captivates the hearts of travelers and nature enthusiasts alike. This moniker gained global recognition back in July 1992 when P. Blazer, the Swiss ambassador to India, officially christened Khajjiar as such, firmly placing it on the world tourism radar.

A Natural Wonderland

Situated near the charming town of Chamba in the Himachal Pradesh region of India, Khajjiar is a small, enchanting saucer-shaped plateau cocooned by dense pine and deodar forests. Here, lush meadows, flourishing woodlands, and ancient temples form an inseparable bond with nature. The Swiss diplomat’s visit and declaration cemented this striking comparison, commemorated by a stone from Khajjiar adorning a collage at the Swiss Parliament, marking Khajjiar as “Mini Switzerland” in India.

Getting There

To embark on a journey to Khajjiar, travelers can opt for buses provided by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation or use their private vehicles. It’s approximately 95 kilometers away from the Pathankot Railway Station and 130 kilometers from the Gaggal Airport in Kangra district.

Khajjiar’s Hidden Treasures

One of Khajjiar’s highlights is the revered Khajji Nag Temple, dedicated to the serpent god and believed to be the inspiration behind the name “Khajjiar.” This ancient temple, dating back to the 10th century, showcases a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, with intricate patterns and imagery adorning its ceilings and wooden posts. These carvings are said to depict the Kauravas, who, according to legend, were once held captive here by the Pandavas. Furthermore, in close proximity, you’ll find shrines devoted to Shiva and the Hadimba goddess.

Must-Visit Attractions

Khajjiar offers a plethora of attractions that will keep you enthralled throughout your visit. Here are some highlights:

  1. Khajjiar Lake: A pristine, emerald-green lake surrounded by cedar forests, perfect for a leisurely stroll or paddle boating.
