The European Union on Monday launched a Red Sea Mission to secure and protect a US-owned cargo ship that was attacked twice in the Red Sea area by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Houthis, backed by Iran, who control much of war-torn Yemen, have been harassing the Red Sea shipping lane since November, to which they say is in a campaign in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

The naval mission by the EU, called “Aspides,” which is Greek for ‘shield,’ aims to be up and running in a few weeks with at least 4 vessels, while the US is already heading with its own naval coalition in the area.

“Europe will ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, working alongside our international partners,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X.

Dozens of Houthi attacks have already disturbed shipping in the Red Sea area, forcing a lot of companies to take alternative routes for shipping. In a recent incident, the US-owned cargo ship was attacked twice in two hours in the Gulf of Aden, which adjoins the Red Sea, maritime security firm Ambrey said.

The ship’s master reported “evidence of shrapnel and damage to paintwork” in the second incident, the British Navy’s UK Maritime Trade Operations said.
