Indian envoy Sanjay Kumar Verma, who was recalled after Canada named senior diplomats as “persons of interest” in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder investigation, has accused Khalistani extremists and terrorists of being “deep assets” of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). In an interview with CTV News, Verma claimed that the Justin Trudeau government consistently supports Khalistani extremists. “This is my allegation. I am also aware that some of these Khalistani extremists and terrorists are deep assets of CSIS, although I’m not presenting any evidence,” he stated.

The Trudeau administration has accused Indian agents of being involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Nijjar, a claim India has rejected as baseless and politically driven. India has demanded concrete proof from Canada to back up its claims. Last week, Trudeau testified that the government’s allegations were based on intelligence rather than solid evidence.

Verma urged the Canadian government to sincerely address India’s key concerns. “We simply ask the Canadian government to recognize our core concerns instead of aligning with those undermining Indian sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. He emphasized that Khalistani extremists, as Canadian citizens, should not be allowed to challenge another nation’s sovereignty.

“What happens in India is for Indian citizens to decide. These Khalistani extremists are Canadian citizens, not Indians, and no country should permit its citizens to challenge the sovereignty of another,” Verma added. He denied all accusations related to Nijjar’s murder, calling them politically motivated and lacking evidence.

Verma also refuted allegations that he directed or coerced individuals to collect information on pro-Khalistani activists, including Nijjar. “As High Commissioner of India, I have never engaged in such activities,” he said. He clarified that monitoring pro-Khalistani elements in Canada is a matter of national interest, with information being gathered from publicly available sources. “We read newspapers, follow their statements, and since we understand Punjabi, we review their social media posts to draw conclusions,” Verma explained.

India-Canada relations have significantly deteriorated after the Trudeau government identified Indian diplomats as persons of interest in the Nijjar case, which India dismissed. In response, India recalled its senior diplomats and expelled six senior Canadian diplomats.
