The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for Delhi’s upcoming Assembly elections on Tuesday, January 7, at 2 PM. A press conference will be held to disclose the election timeline. The 70-member Delhi Assembly’s term ends on February 23, making elections necessary before then. In 2020, the schedule was announced on January 6, with polling on February 8 and vote counting on February 11.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, is targeting a third consecutive term, while the BJP is determined to wrest control of Delhi. Meanwhile, Congress is gearing up for a robust campaign, hoping for an upset victory.
AAP dominated the previous elections, securing 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, leaving the BJP with single-digit wins. Congress, which governed Delhi for 15 years, failed to win a single seat in those elections.
Although Congress and AAP joined forces in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as part of the INDIA bloc, they will compete separately in this Assembly election. With the Assembly’s term concluding on February 23, the elections are crucial for all major parties.
Following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation as Chief Minister in September after securing bail in the liquor policy case, the AAP has promised his return to power, contingent on public support. Meanwhile, the BJP is intensifying its efforts to unseat the AAP, accusing it of corruption.
On Sunday, the AAP became the first major party to announce all 70 candidates for the Assembly elections by releasing its fourth and final list of 38 contenders. Party chief Arvind Kejriwal will contest from the New Delhi constituency for the fourth time, while Chief Minister Atishi will seek re-election from Kalkaji.
