The Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce the assembly election schedule at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 16. Although the media invitation for the press conference at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, did not specify the states, Haryana and Maharashtra’s legislative assembly terms end on November 3 and November 26, respectively.
Jammu and Kashmir’s assembly elections are also anticipated before the Supreme Court’s September 30 deadline, with the Election Commission recently visiting the region to assess preparedness. Assembly elections in Jharkhand are expected soon, with its assembly term ending in January 2025.
Jammu and Kashmir may see elections after a decade, with the last held in 2014. After the Modi government’s abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the region was divided into two Union territories, but elections were delayed due to factors such as a 2022 delimitation exercise.
Recently, the Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir “at the earliest” despite internal and external challenges.
