El Peluca Milei: Analyzing Javier Milei’s Plans for Argentina

“The Socialists think they are God, but all they are is a bunch of heretics, below-average politicians who fake being the ‘average’ citizen.”
– Javier Milei, President of Argentina
Argentina is not a nation that is talked about enough in the international political sphere, and rightfully so. It does not have an area of weighty command where its opinion would be valued or even heard out. It was as irrelevant in world politics as any Latin American nation. (Perhaps with the exclusion of Brazil) A country known just for its football talent like Messi and Maradona had virtually no other role to play. Then why is it being talked about so much these days? It is because of Javier Milei’s election as the President.
Needless to point this out, but Milei has most definitely put Argentina on the world map. The privilege of defeating a “Leftist-Peronist” government after 28 years belonged to his political faction, La Libertad Avanza. What’s even more surprising is to see a man with his personality rise to the very summit of politics in Argentina.
Milei is very vocal in his overt criticism of state control, socialists, and communists. Just after his oath of office on the 10th of December last year, he signed the First Decree of Necessity and Urgency axing down 9 governmental ministries out of a total 18. He has eradicated the Ministry of Culture, of Women, Gender and Diversity, of Environment and established a new Ministry of Human Capital. Another one of the ministries that has been forced to cease all operations under this decree is the Ministry of Education (which has been labeled by Milei as the Ministry of ‘Indoctrination’), making it clear that the state now wants to step back from education and let the private players have their say. This is not surprising coming from his government, which is openly affiliated with an anarcho-capitalistic, libertarian agenda. They want a limited role for the state, affirming Susan Strange’s worldview in “The state of the State” and conforming with the norms of an International Political Economy.
Milei is a staunch supporter of pro-U.S. policy programs and a huge fan of ex-President Donald J. Trump. The latter even congratulated him personally through a video message after his electoral win. Milei had promised a ‘shock therapy’ to pull Argentina out of an economic cataclysm that surrounded it. Inflation was at an all-time high of 140% when Milei chose to devalue its strength by half against the U.S. Dollar. He is assuring citizens that while this seemingly controversial decision might lead to short-term financial woes, it is going to pay off in the long run.
Milei in his first formal speech as President made it clear that any protestors that are deliberately causing disturbances in transportation, i.e., campaigning on roads and locking the normal flow of traffic, might lose their social security benefits as a penalty. This is a warning sign to environmental protestors all around the world who often take to blocking roads as their means of protest.
Javier Milei has also pulled Argentina out of the B.R.I.C.S. Even in his presidential campaign, Milei had voiced harsh criticism of both China and the BRICS countries. “Our geopolitical alignment is with the United States and Israel,” asserted Milei. We are not going to ally with communists.” Mr. Milei is highly ambitious and doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would be a ‘people pleaser’. He will do whatever he thinks is best for Argentina- be it explicitly fighting the “communist-woke” agenda in his nation or branding abortion as ‘murder’, he has cogent plans for his fellow Argentinians who back him and are not shy at all in donning the “El Peluca Milei”. It is going to be exciting.
