The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has escalated its inquiry into the financial dealings of news portal NewsClick by issuing fresh summons to Shanghai-based American millionaire Neville Roy Singham. These summons, dispatched through the letter rogatory route to China, seek Singham’s involvement in the money-laundering investigation linked to the portal’s business operations.
This development follows recent investigations into foreign remittances totaling over Rs 77 crore received by NewsClick between 2018 and 2021. These remittances, supposedly subscriptions to shares and service fees, are under scrutiny by the ED.
Furthermore, investigations revealed that the remittances were linked to companies such as Worldwide Media Holdings LLC, Justice & Education Fund Inc, Tricontinental Ltd Inc, G Span LLC, and Centro Popular Demidas of Brazil. The ED claims these companies are associated with Singham, who is identified as a “contact person of CPC, China.”
The ED’s probe report suggests a deliberate strategy orchestrated by individuals like Prabir Purkayastha, Jason Pfetcher, and Neville Roy Singham to channel foreign funds into PPK Newsclick Studio Pvt. Ltd. Allegations point to Worldwide Media Holdings LLC, helmed by a close associate of Singham, transferring substantial funds to the news portal and then ceasing business activities.
The report further highlights substantial remittances from other entities, emphasizing a lack of evidence supporting the provision of services corresponding to these payments.
This escalation in the probe comes shortly after Delhi Police arrested Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty under terror charges based on references from the ED’s initial investigations. The ED is set to conduct custodial interrogation of Purkayastha, currently in detention.
The latest summons to Singham underscores the ongoing inquiry into the financial intricacies surrounding NewsClick’s operations and its alleged linkages to foreign entities, shedding light on the complexities of this high-profile investigation.
